The Johnstown Flood struck the city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on May 31, 1889, after a dam holding back Lake Conemaugh burst upstream on the Little Conemaugh River. The lake had been a reservoir for the Pennsylvania Canal system's South Fork feeder, and the dam had been neglected by the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, whose wealthy members were prominent in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia society. The wall of water killed more than 2,000 people and swept away much of the mill town, where Cambria Iron Company and other works had drawn workers from across Europe. This 1889 bird's-eye view, produced by the Kurz and Allison firm of Chicago, was issued in the months after the disaster to show the devastated valley and its rebuilding.
