Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1889 was a mill and mining city struggling to recover from the flood of May 31. Clara Barton and the American Red Cross arrived in the valley that summer, and the relief work there was among the organization's earliest large domestic efforts, with food and supplies distributed to families who had lost their homes. Survivors crowded into temporary shelters while volunteers and officials searched the mud for the dead, and many of the victims were never identified. Kurz and Allison, a Chicago lithography firm, produced this bird's-eye rendering in the months after the disaster so that readers far away could follow the destruction street by street.
