Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a town of about 20,000 people that had grown from a canal settlement founded by Joseph Johns around 1800 and renamed in 1834. Its growth had followed the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, which carried coal, grain, and goods over the Allegheny Mountains before the railroads took over that trade. Neighborhoods near the mills grouped newcomers by origin, and Welsh families kept Welsh-language chapels and eisteddfod gatherings alive, while Slovak, Hungarian, and German households built their own parishes. Residents would have known their town as a crowded valley community, cut between steep ridges, where the rivers set the limits on where anyone could build.
