Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a crowded industrial town of roughly 20,000 people, pressed into a narrow valley where the Conemaugh and Stonycreek rivers meet. Its economy rested on iron and steel, and the Cambria Iron Company's works employed a large share of the men who had come from Wales, Germany, Hungary, and other parts of Europe, along with migrants from the nearby coal and farm country. Dense rows of frame and brick houses climbed the surrounding hillsides, and churches, saloons, and boarding houses served a population that spoke many languages. The town's civic life was tied closely to its mills, and its residents knew their city first as a place that made rails and iron for a growing nation.
