Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a mill town on the Conemaugh and Stonycreek rivers, where the Cambria Iron Company and the Pennsylvania Railroad provided most of the work. On May 31, 1889, after days of heavy rain, the earthen South Fork Dam, which held back Lake Conemaugh upstream, gave way, and a wall of water rushed down the narrow valley. The flood tore through the mills, rail yards and neighborhoods, and debris piled against the stone arch of the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge caught fire, adding to the destruction. Thousands died, and the disaster drew national attention, prompting relief efforts and a rebuilding that the valley's industrial life depended on. This map shows the town as it looked to residents who had lived through that afternoon.
