Johnstown, in Cambria County, sat in the narrow valleys where the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers meet, and by the late nineteenth century its economy rested on iron and steel. The Cambria Iron Company, later Cambria Steel, drew large numbers of workers from Central and Eastern Europe, and neighborhoods on the hillsides and river flats grew up around the mills and their rail lines. Residents knew their city first for the catastrophe of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork dam failed upstream and floodwater killed more than 2,000 people, after which the town rebuilt its streets, bridges, and houses. Luzerne Street, like much of the city, was shaped by that cycle of industrial work, immigrant settlement, and recovery from the flood.
