South Fork, a borough in Cambria County, sat in the narrow valley of the Little Conemaugh River in 1900, a few miles upstream from Johnstown. Its people lived with the memory of the South Fork dam, an earthen embankment built in the late 1830s to feed the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. On May 31, 1889, that dam failed, and the flood it released swept down the valley, killing more than 2,000 people in Johnstown and the towns along the river. By 1900 the borough was rebuilding its streets, churches, and homes, and the railroad and coal trade that had drawn workers to the valley were still the main sources of work. Residents would have known South Fork first as the place where the great flood began.
