West Newton, a borough in Westmoreland County on the Youghiogheny River, is shown here as it stood in 1900, roughly thirty miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Its fortunes followed the bituminous coal beneath the surrounding hills, which supplied furnaces, rail lines, and the factories of the Pittsburgh district. River barges and railroad connections tied local merchants and farmers to those markets, and the borough's streets held the stores, churches, and homes of families whose livelihoods depended on that trade. Schools, fire companies, and fraternal lodges gave residents their civic and social life. The town on this map was poised just before the industrial expansion of the early twentieth century.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of West Newton, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
