Rochester, Pennsylvania, sits on the north bank of the Ohio River where the Beaver River joins it, in Beaver County about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh. In 1900 the town was part of the industrial belt that stretched along the Ohio and its tributaries, where river traffic, rail lines, and mills drew workers from the surrounding farms and from Europe. Its economy depended on the manufacturing that followed the region's coal and iron, and the river was its commercial lifeline, carrying freight and passengers past the wharves and boatyards. Residents of that era would have known the town for its riverfront, its churches and schools, and the steady pull of work in the mills across the valley. Floods on the Ohio were a recurring threat to low-lying streets, and the town's street plan and building lines reflect a community built close to the water.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Rochester, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
