The Pennsylvania Railroad line that runs through Gettysburg is the particular feature this 1913 view puts at the center, with the battlefield stretching beyond it. By 1913, the fiftieth anniversary of the 1863 battle was approaching, and the town had become a place of pilgrimage for Union and Confederate veterans and their families. Railroad lines like this one had carried thousands of soldiers to and from the field during the fighting and the decades after, and they helped turn the ground into a destination for tourists. The picture is worth a close look for how the open farmland and the rail corridor sit side by side in the same frame.
