Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1888 was a small county seat in Adams County, where farming, orchards, and local trade shaped daily life. The Gettysburg Railroad linked the town to the wider rail network at Hanover Junction, bringing in visitors and freight. Pennsylvania College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary gave the town a scholarly character alongside its shops and churches. The town's identity, though, rested on the battle fought there July 1-3, 1863, which by 1888 had become a source of civic pride, veterans' reunions, and monument building across the fields south and east of town. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the battle drew large numbers of old soldiers back to the town that summer, and residents would have known Gettysburg first as a place of memory.
