Girardville, a coal borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, sat in 1889 at the heart of the anthracite fields that supplied much of the nation's household heating fuel. The town grew on land tied to the Girard Estate, named for the Philadelphia merchant Stephen Girard, and its residents were largely Irish, Welsh, and German miners and their families who worked the surrounding collieries and breakers. Coal left the valley on the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and its branches, linking local mines to markets in Philadelphia and New York. The Molly Maguire trials at Pottsville, held in 1876 and 1877, were still fresh in the region's memory, and in 1889 people here measured their days by shift whistles, wage disputes, and the state of the coal trade.
