Jemyn, Pennsylvania, in 1889 lay within a state whose economy rested on coal, iron, and the railroads that carried them. Pennsylvania was a leading producer of both bituminous and anthracite coal, and many mining and mill communities depended on one employer and on the steady flow of rail freight. That spring, the failure of the South Fork Dam upstream of Johnstown on May 31 sent a flood through the Conemaugh Valley, killing more than 2,000 people and drawing national attention to the risks of industrial growth and the wealth held by a few owners. Readers in small Pennsylvania towns followed the disaster through newspapers and telegraph dispatches, and most knew their state chiefly for its mines, furnaces, and rail lines.
