Minersville, a borough in Schuylkill County in the anthracite coal region of eastern Pennsylvania, was in 1889 a town shaped by the mines that ringed it. Its residents worked in collieries and breakers or in the shops and stores that served miners' families, and the railroads that hauled coal to markets in Philadelphia and New York were the lifeblood of the local economy. The population was a mix of Welsh, Irish, German, and other immigrant families, many of whom had come to the valleys to work underground. Life in the borough revolved around churches, fraternal lodges, and the rhythm of shift whistles, and the region's labor disputes and mine accidents were never far from people's minds. The street-by-street view drawn that year records the town as it stood at the height of the coal boom.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Minersville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
