Hamburg, a borough on the Schuylkill River in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was in 1889 a small river town whose fortunes followed the Schuylkill valley's older industries. Its residents lived within reach of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, whose lines carried coal, iron, and freight through the region and tied these hill towns to Reading and Philadelphia. Berks County as a whole was known for its iron furnaces, brickworks, textile and cigar shops, and the farms of its Pennsylvania German families, and Hamburg shared in that mix of trade and farming. A street-by-street survey like this one captured the churches, mills, and dwellings that defined local life, and it was often made to show townspeople and prospective buyers how their community looked at the time.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hamburg, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
