Mahanoy City, in the anthracite country of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, was a coal town in 1889, and its streets, churches, and company buildings were arranged around the mines that employed most of its residents. Mining families came from Ireland, Wales, Germany, and later from Poland and Lithuania, and the town's population grew quickly during the 1880s as new shafts opened and more workers arrived by rail. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and its branch lines carried the coal out of the valley, so the depot, the breakers, and the freight yards were the busiest parts of town. Only a few years earlier, the Molly Maguires trials had drawn national attention to the county's labor disputes, and miners in 1889 still spoke of the strikes and wage fights of that era as part of the local memory.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
