Grove City, a borough in Mercer County in western Pennsylvania, was a small town in 1901, and its life revolved around the college that had grown up on its edge since the 1870s. Grove City College, a Presbyterian-affiliated school, gave the town much of its character, shaping its churches, its streets and the rhythms of its school year. Beyond the campus, the surrounding county drew its wealth from farming, the railroads that carried goods through the region, and the heavy industry of nearby Pittsburgh and the Shenango Valley, which set the pace of work for many families who lived in towns like this one. Residents in 1901 would have known Grove City first as a college town and a stop on the rail lines, a place where commerce was modest and the community's institutions carried more weight than its factories.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Grove City, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1901. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
