Tarentum, a borough on the Allegheny River about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, was a working river town in 1901, when this view was drawn. Its fortunes were tied to the Allegheny Valley, where rail lines and river barges carried coal, iron, and manufactured goods out of the region's mills and factories. That same year, the formation of the United States Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh signaled how deeply the surrounding valley towns depended on the steel economy and the jobs it supplied. Residents of Tarentum would have known their town as a place of mills, church spires, and close-set streets running down toward the water. The borough's growth in these years brought new families, shops, and schools to its hillside neighborhoods.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Tarentum, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1901. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
