Harmony, Pennsylvania, in Butler County, was a small town in 1901 with a name carried over from the Harmony Society, the Rappist religious community that founded the settlement in 1804 and moved its members west to Indiana in 1814. By the turn of the century the town was an agricultural and village center within reach of the Pittsburgh region, where steel mills, coal mining, and glassmaking were drawing in workers and capital from across the Appalachian states. Residents in 1901 would have known Harmony as a quiet community whose older Harmonist past still gave it a distinct identity. The drawing shows the town's streets, churches, and houses as they stood at the start of the twentieth century, a period when small Pennsylvania boroughs were seeing rail connections and local commerce expand.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Harmony, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1901. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
