Ford City, a young glass-making borough on the Allegheny River in Armstrong County, was taking shape in 1896 around its plate glass works. The factory drew workers from the surrounding river valley and from the Pittsburgh region's glass and coal trades, and its furnaces and warehouses shaped the town's layout along the water. Residents in those years knew Ford City as a company town in the making, with its streets, churches, and houses growing up in step with the plant's payroll. The map records that moment, when a settlement built on industrial jobs was still filling in its blocks and its civic life was only beginning to take form.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Ford City, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1896. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
