Oil City, Pennsylvania, in 1896 was a river town built on the oil industry that had grown up in the hills around it after Edwin Drake's 1859 well at nearby Titusville. Where Oil Creek meets the Allegheny River, the town handled crude oil moved by pipeline, wagon, and rail, and refineries and storage tanks lined the waterfront and the valley floor. Its streets and business blocks were tightly packed between steep slopes, and the people who lived there knew the town as a center of the oil trade, with its exchanges, shipping offices, and newspaper watching every swing in prices. The bird's-eye view of that crowded valley captures a place whose fortunes still rose and fell with the wells upstream.
