Glassport, a river borough on the Monongahela south of Pittsburgh, was a working community in 1902, and its name came from the glassworks that had long anchored its economy. Its residents lived within easy reach of the much larger steel and tube mills at neighboring McKeesport, and in 1901 those mills had been folded into the newly formed United States Steel Corporation, a merger that shaped the region's jobs for decades. The river carried coal and freight past the town, and railroad lines tied its factories to Pittsburgh markets. This 1902 bird's-eye view records the streets, houses, churches, and plants as they stood in that industrial moment, when the borough's future still depended on glass, iron, and the river.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Glassport, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1902. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
