California, Pennsylvania, sat on the Monongahela River in Washington County, about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, and in 1902 it was a small river town whose fortunes rose and fell with the coal mines and river traffic of the surrounding valleys. Coal from the hills upriver and the steady work of the region's mines and riverboats shaped daily life for many of the town's families. The town's best-known institution was the state normal school, which trained teachers and drew students from across the county, so classrooms, boarding houses, and the campus were as much a part of local life as the river wharves. Residents of the period would have known the town first as a place of schooling and river commerce, a community where church, school, and the town's few streets formed the center of civic life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of California, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1902. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
