Named for Pennsylvania's nickname, the Keystone State label was made for a Louisville, Kentucky, firm, the Holbrook Tobacco Manufacturing Company, and it shows clipper and steam ships rather than the Keystone State itself. Those vessels reflect the river and maritime trade that moved goods through the Ohio River city in the 1870s. The Louisville Steam Lithograph Company printed many such colorful labels, which were pasted onto tobacco packages to catch the eye of buyers in crowded shops. The bright color work makes it a useful example of how commercial art doubled as advertising in the decades after the Civil War.
