William Penn's arrival in Pennsylvania is the subject here, rendered as a color halftone reproduction of an oil painting by J.L.G. Ferris, the artist known for his large history scenes. The print belongs to a series called The Pageant of a Nation, issued by The Foundation Press of Cleveland in the early 1930s, when reproductions of patriotic historical paintings were widely sold to schools and homes. Penn, the Quaker founder of the colony, first landed in the region in 1682 and set about laying out what became Philadelphia. Ferris's composition is a conjectural scene, since the artist's view of the landing rests on imagination as much as documentation.
