Clinton County in north-central Pennsylvania, along the West Branch of the Susquehanna, is the setting here, and the title places the view inside the grounds of a camp meeting. These revival gatherings drew families from surrounding farms and towns for several days at a stretch, with preaching, hymn singing, and prayer taking place in an open-air tabernacle or preaching stand at the center. Participants lodged in tents or simple cottages arranged in rows and circles around that stand, so the layout itself reflected the community's shared routine. Campmeetings were a major part of rural religious life across the state during the 1800s, and a view of the grounds shows how the crowd and the spiritual purpose of the meeting were organized in one place.
