Seen from the west, this color lithograph shows Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as a cluster of church spires, school buildings, and factory works. The artist drew the view from nature and then transferred it to stone, a common method for city views of the mid-1800s. Bethlehem had been founded in 1741 by Moravian settlers, and the combination of religious, educational, and industrial buildings reflects how the town had grown by the 1840s and 1850s. Printed views like this were often prized by residents and visitors who wanted a record of a town's appearance at the time.
