Camp meetings were a fixture of 19th-century American revivalism, and this view shows one of the open-air gatherings held near West Branch in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. Such meetings drew families from surrounding farms and villages for days at a time, combining preaching, hymn singing and communal worship in a setting built for crowds. The exterior view is useful for seeing how these grounds were laid out, with tents, booths and the simple structures that sheltered attendees. Clinton County's rural landscape gives the scene its character, since these gatherings were as much social occasions as religious ones.
