Pottsville sits in a valley of Schuylkill County, and this bird's-eye view was drawn from the surrounding Sharp Mountain, looking down on the town. The print is dedicated to the "enterprising citizens of the Coal Region," a phrase that reflects the boom in anthracite mining in the 1830s, when coal fields, canals, and railroads were reshaping this part of Pennsylvania. The engraver J.R. Smith, who ran a drawing academy in Philadelphia, was known for detailed city and landscape views of this kind. The record notes that the copy was hand-colored by W.E. Smith, so its color is a later, individual touch.
