Topton, a small borough in northwestern Berks County, Pennsylvania, was a community of farms, workshops, and churches in 1893, when its residents still spoke a good deal of Pennsylvania German at home. The surrounding county relied on fertile farmland and on the iron, textile, and hosiery trades that clustered around Reading, the county seat, and its railroads. That summer the Panic of 1893 spread through the region, and banks failed and mills cut back or closed, which left many local families uncertain about wages and savings. A map drawn in the middle of such a year shows a town at a moment when its streets, churches, and business blocks were still being built out, and when most of its people measured progress by the harvest, the mill whistle, and the next train through the valley.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Topton, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1893. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
