McKeesport, where the Youghiogheny River joins the Monongahela about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was a center of Pennsylvania's iron and steel industry in 1893. Its largest employer was the National Tube Company, whose pipe mills along the riverfront supplied pipe for oil fields, gas lines, and railroads, and the work drew immigrant laborers into crowded streets near the mills. Tin plate and other metal works also lined the rivers, and the Pennsylvania Railroad and its branch lines carried finished goods out of the valley. The financial panic that began that same year brought layoffs and slowed furnaces across the region, leaving many households unsure of the months ahead.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1893. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
