Macungie, a small borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, was in 1893 a farm town at the edge of the Lehigh Valley, where many residents spoke Pennsylvania German at home and worshipped in churches founded by their ancestors. Its economy rested on grain, dairy, and livestock sold to nearby markets, while the larger manufacturing centers of Allentown and the cement works along the Lehigh River drew away some of its young workers. Rail lines running through the valley linked the town to Reading, Allentown, and Philadelphia, making it a convenient stop for farmers and travelers but never a major industrial place. A map drawn that year therefore shows a community defined less by factories than by its streets of brick and frame houses, its churches, and the fields that lay just beyond them.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Macungie, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1893. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
