Morrisville sits on the Pennsylvania bank of the Delaware River, directly across from Trenton, New Jersey, and in 1893 its fortunes were tied to that river and to the larger city over the water. The Delaware and Raritan Canal and the Pennsylvania-Delaware Canal had long carried coal, grain, and lumber past its wharves, and barge traffic and nearby mills gave the borough much of its daily work. That summer the Panic of 1893 began, and manufacturers across the Trenton area cut wages and laid off workers, so residents would have felt the downturn quickly. Bucks County was otherwise a farming county, and many families here split their time between fields, river work, and the shops across the bridge.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Morrisville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1893. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
