Morrisville, on the Pennsylvania bank of the Delaware River across from Trenton, New Jersey, was a Bucks County river town in 1893, when this bird's-eye view recorded its streets, houses, and works. The Delaware Canal ran along the riverfront, carrying coal and freight south toward Philadelphia, and the rail lines and river traffic tied the borough's shops and mills to the wider region. That spring the Panic of 1893 began to spread through the country, and mill owners, shopkeepers, and workers along the river felt the slowdown as orders dropped and wages came under pressure. The map captures the town just as those hard times were arriving, with its residential blocks and commercial streets laid out between the canal and the river.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Morrisville 2, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1893. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
