Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1895 was a railroad city built around the shops and yards of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which had made it one of the largest rail repair and manufacturing centers in the country. The Altoona Works employed thousands of machinists, boilermakers, and carpenters, and the company's presence shaped nearly every street, neighborhood, and church in the valley below the Allegheny Front. Iron and steel production, along with the shops' steady demand for engines and cars, drew families from across Pennsylvania and from Europe, and the population grew quickly through the late nineteenth century. Bird's-eye views like this one were commissioned by local boosters to show prospective residents and investors a city of tidy blocks, factories, and rail lines spread across a mountain basin.
