Bradford, in McKean County in northwestern Pennsylvania, was by 1895 a town built on oil. Drilling in the surrounding Bradford field had begun in 1875, and within two decades derricks, pumping stations, and refineries crowded the hills and valleys around the business district. Railroad lines carried crude and refined oil out of the valley, and the money from the field paid for brick commercial blocks, churches, and schools that gave the town its settled look. Residents of the period would have known Bradford first as an oil town, a place where fortunes were made quickly and where the boom's rough edges were never far from the streets.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bradford, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
