Clearfield, Pennsylvania, in 1895 was the seat of Clearfield County, a town on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the state's north-central hills. Its economy rested on the timber and coal that surrounded it. Lumber mills had worked the county's hemlock and white pine for decades, and bituminous coal mining was expanding alongside them, drawing workers and merchants to the town. Residents knew Clearfield as a lumber and coal center, and the town's streets, churches, courthouse, and riverfront industry reflected that double dependence on the forests and the mines.
