Brookville, the county seat of Jefferson County in northwestern Pennsylvania, stood in 1895 at the center of a region still shaped by timber. Lumber milling and bark-tanning works, which drew on the hemlock forests covering the surrounding hills, supplied much of the local employment, and the courthouse, stores, and churches of the borough served farm families and loggers who came in from the outlying townships. The town sat along Sandy Lick Creek, and its fortunes rose and fell with the cutting of the nearby forests, a fact that would have been plain to anyone walking its streets that year. A map drawn at this moment records a community that knew itself mainly as a market and courthouse town in a county whose great timber stands were already being harvested.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Brookville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
