Alburtis and Lockridge sit in southern Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the rolling farmland that stretches out from Allentown. Around the turn of the twentieth century, when bird's-eye views of small Pennsylvania communities were especially popular, the Lehigh Valley was known for its heavy industry, including iron, cement, and silk mills, and for the rail lines that carried those goods out of the valley. Most families in the surrounding countryside were of Pennsylvania German descent and made their living from farming, with church, school, and the local grange or fire company shaping civic life. Residents of these villages would have known their home as a quiet stop between the larger industrial city to the north and the rural townships that surrounded it.
