Photographers at work among the cherry trees give this view its particular focus, a scene of the capital's spring bloom seen through the eyes of the people who came to record it. Japan gave the trees to Washington in 1912, and they were planted along the Tidal Basin, where crowds gathered each April. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city for visitors and publishers in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating are visible, so the image shows some wear.
