Catalogued simply as *Congress, Washington, D.C.*, this glass negative carries a title devised by Library staff rather than by its maker, so the view is best read as a scene tied to the national legislature. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that photographed the capital in the early twentieth century, and it is dated only to a span between 1909 and 1940. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library in 1947. Visitors should also look for the streaks and blemishes on its surface, which the Library attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
