Japanese cherry trees are the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital in the early twentieth century. The trees trace back to 1912, when Japan gave Washington cherry saplings and First Lady Helen Taft planted one of the first near the Tidal Basin. The date is an estimate, placed between 1910 and 1920 from similar negatives, and faint streaks across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
