Howard University, the historically Black institution in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and this glass negative offers a view of its campus from the early 1910s. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital and its landmarks in those years, made the negative, and its title and date come from the company's own notes, which were not independently verified. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the surface are signs of age in the original coatings rather than errors in the image itself.
