Bare branches in January show the Japanese cherry trees of Washington in their off-season, a sight the spring bloom usually overshadows. The trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo, and the first were planted around the Tidal Basin in 1912, quickly becoming a seasonal draw for visitors. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century for postcards and souvenirs, made this glass negative. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing the scene.
