The title on the negative sleeve points to the Smithsonian Institution, whose red sandstone building on the National Mall is known as the Castle. The institution was founded in 1846 with a bequest from the British scientist James Smithson, and its first building, designed by James Renwick Jr., was completed in 1855. The National Photo Company, which made this negative, produced many views of the capital for tourists and postcard buyers in the early twentieth century. The title is unverified, and the faint streaks across the glass come from deterioration of the original coating.
