Taken from the Smithsonian Institution's Castle, this view sweeps across the National Mall, and the six glass negatives were joined to form a five-part panorama. The National Museum of Natural History, completed on the Mall in 1910, appears near the center, which places the scene in the years just after the building went up. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes, made the set. Wide panoramas like this were popular with travelers who wanted to take in a whole city at once.
