This photograph shows the Carnegie-funded central public library at the corner of Massachusetts and New York Avenues NW, near Mount Vernon Square, which the record labels "Carnegie Institution." Andrew Carnegie's gifts paid for many American libraries around the turn of the 20th century, and Washington's building opened in 1903 as the city's main branch, with its classical columns and stone facade reflecting the Beaux-Arts taste of the era. The print, issued by the American Press Association around 1910, documents the building only a few years into its life as a public institution. The library kept its central role until 1972, when a larger building replaced it.
