Students gather before a glass case of George Washingtoniana, the keepsakes and memorabilia of the first president, on a museum outing in the capital. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the city's schools and institutions around 1900, made the picture as a cyanotype, an inexpensive contact process that produces white images on deep Prussian blue. Field trips like this one reflected a common belief of the period: that public museums could teach history and civic pride alongside lessons in the classroom. The image preserves how young pupils once encountered national relics up close.
