The Smithsonian Castle, the red sandstone building on the National Mall, is the subject here, a landmark that has housed the Smithsonian Institution since its completion in 1855. The National Photo Company made large numbers of views like this in the early twentieth century, when Washington was drawing growing crowds of tourists and postcard publishers were eager for images of the capital. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these plates become after decades of storage.
