Key Mansion, a Georgetown house tied to the family of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the poem that became "The Star-Spangled Banner," gives this negative a more personal link to American history than most Washington views. The National Photo Company made the plate sometime between 1910 and 1935, when it was recording the capital's streets and landmarks for visitors and other buyers. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
